 News & Notes

Oregon is a State with 9 Chapters, covering hundreds of miles and varied landscapes.  Chapters generally meet monthly in their home towns, from Portland to Ontario to Klamath Falls.  We meet as a State Board in Eugene (home of the University of Oregon) four times per school year, with representatives from many Chapters as Officers and an open invitation to Chapter Presidents and anyone interested in attending.  Click here to find out what's happening around the State; leave messages and questions in the "Contact" section of our website.

We will be posting important stories of the Chapters and ladies of Oregon ADK and their families and friends in the NEAR FUTURE.  Please be sure to check back with us!

Overall, we work towards the Purposes of Alpha Delta Kappa:

  • To give recognition to outstanding women educators.

  • To build a fraternal fellowship among women in the field of education which will add to their effectiveness in the promotion of excellence in education.

  • To promote high standards of education and thereby strengthen the status and advancement of the education profession.

  • To promote educational and charitable projects and activities, to sponsor scholarships, to further and maintain worthy standards in the field of education and to cooperate with worthy community programs relating to education and charities.

  • To contribute to world understanding, goodwill, and peace through an international fellowship of women educators united in the ideals of education.

A Poem Contribution by Debbie Plummer, Mu Chapter:

Christmas from a Female Point of View

There’s 57 Christmas cards all left to write and send

The house is not yet “jolly”, so that’s something I must mend

The presents must be first picked out, and then they must be wrapped

(Did I forget to mention, I must mail them and adapt?)

The tree is left to decorate and Christmas treats, I’ll make

Then I must plan a Christmas feast (there can’t be a mistake!)

I hear complaints that I’m not fun, my laugh just isn’t hearty

And could that be because I now, must plan a Christmas party?

And after Christmas dinner’s done, and they dream ‘bout their wishes

I’m left alone in kitchen, as I start on piles of dishes

I know You look from Heav’n above, You’re hearing all the hype

But Christmas isn’t happy , when you’re of the female type

Yes, You were born on Christmas day, so many years ago

And your Mom worked so hard that day, I’m sure that You must know

We think the Christmas season’s when we love each, every neighbor

But like your Mom, for women, it’s become a time of labor.

So hear me, Lord, I love you. It’s the season, I must fix.

I’ll celebrate Your coming on December 26.

Northwest Region's Carol Merriman, Oregon Alpha

Carol teaches second grade in Portland, Oregon and has 24 years of experience in education.  The scholarship will support her goal of receiving re-certification and attending a week long Reading Institute course at Columbia University.  Says Carol, "The scholarship will help me demonstrate how to successfully support second grade students with this writing standard:  Write a narrative piece, and retell a long event, or a series of short events."
